Not so long ago, the idea of having a touchscreen phone that told you the weather, found you a date and let you kill zombies seemed like something out of science fiction movie. Now everyone has one.

So what’s next?

From touchless operation to biometric scanning, we select three future features that are already here. Lets take a look.

Touchless Controls

Like something from Minority Report, several phones such as Samsung’s Galaxy S4 offer a remarkable feature where, to perform an on-screen function, you no longer even have to touch the screen.

The S4 features a specialized sensor near the top of the phone that detects your hand motions. When turned on, you can make various gestures to complete specific actions. Screen off? Hold your hand over the phone to view notifications, check the time and more.

When viewing your emails or websites, you can move your hand up or down across the sensor to scroll through the page. You can even answer incoming calls by swiping your hand to the left then to the right of sensor.

Fingerprint Readers

Controls aren’t the only things getting an upgrade. Your phone can now be secured by biometrics, requiring your distinctive fingerprint to gain access.

Unlike previous incarnations of fingerprint readers, the one on Apple’s iPhone 5s is particularly unobtrusive. Since it’s located on the home button - a button that you have to press anyway to start up your phone - the actual fingerprint scan takes less than a second and doesn’t require an additional step.

A more convenient way to keep your phone protected is no longer the stuff of spy novels.

Flexible Screens

If you’re looking for a more visual sign of the future, look no further than these flexible screens. Science fiction, you say? Nope. Science fact. 

Aside from the “cool” factor, there are several advantages to a flexible screen. According to LG, who has their very own G Flex phone, these new flexible screens are virtually unbreakable as they’re made on plastic substrate rather than glass. This makes it perfect for even the most accident prone person. In addition, they're thinner and lighter than the traditional glass display.

What’s better is that these new flexible screens mean that instead of the traditional rectangular phone shape, we may end up having oval or even hexagonal phones. Once we figure out how to shrink down the size of our batteries and processors, we could even end up with paper thin phones.

Touchless controls, fingerprint readers and flexible displays sound like something out of movies, but it’s all very real ineed.
