What the Critics Are Saying...

Tech Advisor

We like the iRiver Story. It's smarter looking than the Kindle, or Cooler Reader and the built in audio playback and speaker is nice. We're not quite sure that a full qwerty keyboard was required, and note-taking is a non-starter, but the presence of multiple control buttons on the top row is great,...

An attractive and sturdy device, the Story has more open format support, but the keyboard is almost redundant and it's not as easy to use or as good value as Amazon's Kindle.

Pocket-lint

Compared to other devices on the market aside from the Kindle, the Story comes out near the top. File compatibility, battery life and music playback are all excellent - our only criticisms are that it can be a little slow at times (loading, changing pages on some documents) and that it doesn't come...

It may not be as exciting as the Barnes and Noble Nook, or do anything particularly new, but it’s a solid ebook reader. The only real downer is the price – just £20 more gets you the Sony Reader Touch Edition. If the price comes down though, this is a real contend.

As first attempts go, the iRiver Story is merit-worthy, but it’s got that unmistakable air of a work in progress. If iRiver’s record in the MP3 player market is anything to go by it’ll get it right sooner or later, but until then Sony’s range of devices remain the benchmark t...

We like the iRiver Story. It's smarter looking than the Kindle, or Cooler Reader and the built in audio playback and speaker is nice. We're not quite sure that a full qwerty keyboard was required, and note-taking is a non-starter, but the presence of multiple control buttons on the top row is great, as are the large page-turn buttons on the left and right side of the system. The relatively slow system means that reading anything other pure text will test your patience, but the music playback and speaker turned out to be a surprisingly good. In all, this isn't a bad eBook reader at all.

Compared to other devices on the market aside from the Kindle, the Story comes out near the top. File compatibility, battery life and music playback are all excellent - our only criticisms are that it can be a little slow at times (loading, changing pages on some documents) and that it doesn't come with any kind of protective casing. If you're just not into the Kindle idea and want to buy books and content with a bit more freedom, get your hands on this almost identikit product.

PC Pro

Nicely designed and packed with features, but a little on the expensive side

The critical issue isn't linked to the features, or the quality of build, or the file format support. It's the price, which is far too high – more costly than any of Sony's current offerings, including the Reader Touch. Don't get us wrong, we do like the iRiver Story; it's better than most...More

The critical issue isn't linked to the features, or the quality of build, or the file format support. It's the price, which is far too high – more costly than any of Sony's current offerings, including the Reader Touch. Don't get us wrong, we do like the iRiver Story; it's better than most readers we've seen, but it doesn't quite do enough to justify that price premium.
