What the Critics Are Saying...

Cardcruncher

The Mastercard Gold Card is the high end of Mastercard’s Luxury Card line. It offers 1 point per dollar on all purchases, just like on the Mastercard Titanium Card and Mastercard Black Card. The difference is, each point on the Mastercard Gold Card is worth $0.02 when redeemed for airfare or cash ba...

The Mastercard® Gold Card™ has a lot of valuable perks, but they’re simply not enough to justify the card’s $995 annual fee. Other travel rewards credit cards  charge $500 or less per year and offer many of the same benefits. If you only travel once or twice per year, go with a travel rewards card w...

Some things in life aren't meant to be a good deal—they're done for the panache. Coming with a $995 annual fee and a subscription to "Luxury Magazine," this gold-plated credit card is one of those things.

Designed for well-heeled cardholders who can afford to pay a nearly four-figure annual fee, this splashy metal credit card offers surprisingly few rewards for a card of its kind; but elite travelers with a taste for luxury will appreciate the Gold Card’s exclusive discounts and services.

The sticking point is, of course, that extremely high annual fee. If your objective is a luxury-class card with good travel benefits, there are alternatives that can offer a better value.

The Mastercard Gold Card is the high end of Mastercard’s Luxury Card line. It offers 1 point per dollar on all purchases, just like on the Mastercard Titanium Card and Mastercard Black Card. The difference is, each point on the Mastercard Gold Card is worth $0.02 when redeemed for airfare or cash back. That puts it on par with any cash-back credit cards that earns 2% cash. It’s worth considering if you like the idea of earning cash back rewards, though the sky-high $995 annual fee may give you pause.

The Mastercard® Gold Card™ has a lot of valuable perks, but they’re simply not enough to justify the card’s $995 annual fee. Other travel rewards credit cards  charge $500 or less per year and offer many of the same benefits. If you only travel once or twice per year, go with a travel rewards card with a low annual fee and bonus rewards in the right categories. Those will mean a lot more to you than fringe airport benefits that you’re not regularly using.

The luxury benefits are not worth the extraordinary annual fee

from Bankrate

The 24-karat gold-plated, stainless steel MasterCard Gold Card is an extravagance in the credit card world. The hefty $995 annual fee can be prohibitively expensive, unless you spend thousands every month and take full advantage of its perks, which are mainly travel-related.

This card is not a good value

Given the competition in the luxury/premium card market, MasterCard has a lot of catching up to do. The Gold card doesn’t make sense because there’s not a way to break even from the effective annual fee.
