Info & Contact
Straight Talk’s parent company, TracFone has more than 20 years of experience in the mobile industry. As a budget-conscious provider, they offer lower rates than many of the major carriers while using the networks of T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint to provide service.
The plan selection through this carrier is sparse. However, partnerships with WalMart make it easy to find top-off cards and new devices if you’re looking to avoid shopping online. Monthly plans range between $30 and $60. There are no pay-as-you-go options available.
If you need a phone, this carrier has a great roster of options ranging from the latest flagships to budget- or teen-friendly options. Device financing is offered through third-party providers. If you wish to bring your phone to Straight Talk, they support most unlocked GSM phones--including those from Sprint, Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile.
Does This Carrier Fit My Needs?
- Affordable plans for data-users
- Unlimited international calling option available
- Great phone selection
- No data overage fees
- Lowest useful data option starts at 5GB
- Phone financing includes fees and interest depending on the model chosen
Unlimited International Plans: While they limit the number of unique international telephone numbers you can dial, these plans and add-ons are some of the most affordable amongst all U.S. carriers.
In-Store Access: If you’re looking to avoid the costs of major carriers, you’re often left without a way to walk into a store to pick up devices, accessories or phone time. Thanks to their partnership with WalMart, there’s a good chance you’ll find a store nearby if you need anything.
Massive Phone Selection: While many smaller carriers limit your choices to either the latest--and most expensive--options or some device from a manufacturer you’ve never heard of, Straight Talk’s selection of phones rivals any major carrier.
Awards and Recognitions
As Straight Talk doesn’t manage any of its own networks, it tends be overlooked by the typical mobile ratings and awards groups. However, online forums and reviews for the service are positive. Most love the pricing while others find the fast customer service a breath of fresh air in a world of endless hold times and voice-activated menus.
How is the Network Coverage and Speed?
Offering an accurate summary of coverage or speed with this carrier is difficult. This is because they use the networks of all 4 major carriers. Depending on your device and region, you might even bounce between a few networks.
We recommend checking the summaries for the individual carriers to get an idea of what speeds to expect. You can use the links below!
For more information about coverage and networks in your area, be sure to check out their Coverage Map.
Do They Charge Roaming Fees?
No! Thanks to the ability to use the networks of every major carrier in the U.S. roaming isn’t a concern with this carrier for calls from the U.S.
International roaming is not possible with Straight Talk. However, if your phone is unlocked, you should be able to swap in a prepaid SIM from a carrier at your destination or pick up a travel SIM before your trip.
Do They Charge Long Distance Fees?
All Straight Talk plans include calling to any number in the U.S.
If you need to place calls to another country, you’ll find two options available:
- Unlimited Nationwide Talk Plan: With this plan, you can enjoy unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling to Mexico, Canada, China and India. Landline calls are available to more than 1000 destinations. However, there is one catch--you’re limited to 15 unique numbers per month.
- $10 Global Calling Card: These cards carry over from month to month and provide affordable rates to popular destinations around the world. Rates start at $0.01 per minute. You can add as many cards as you need to your line of service each month.
For more information on international long distance options, consult their International Calling page.
Can I Tether My Phone?
No, you cannot tether on Straight Talk plans.
The Terms and Conditions state:
“STRAIGHT TALK UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR: ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER YOUR DEVICE TO A LAPTOP OR PERSONAL COMPUTER OTHER THAN FOR THE USE OF WIRELESS SYNC.”
Can I Rollover Unused Data?
Data rollover is not available. In their FAQ, they state:
“Any unused balances that exist at the time you refill your Service will not carry over or accumulate.”
What Add-ons or Bundles are Available?
Other than the international calling options listed above, no phone plan add-ons or bundles are available.
Can I Bring My Own Device?
Yes! The carrier supports unlocked GSM and CDMA phones. You will need an activation kit--available both in-store and online.
For more information on bringing your own device--or to start the process online--refer to their Bring Your Own Phone page.
Does This Carrier Require a Credit Check?
This carrier does not require a credit check to start service on basic plans!
Should you wish to use their SmartPAY Upgrade Plans, there is a credit check. You'll need the following information:
- Age verification--such as a government-issued ID
- $1000 monthly income before taxes
- Social security number
Do They Charge an Early Termination Fee?
No! You can leave the service at any time by not renewing your monthly card or by cancelling your auto-refill. As device financing terms are set by third-party providers, you should contact the financing company prior to cancelling to check for any fees they might charge.
Can I Port My Number To or From Straight Talk?
Yes! They follow all Wireless Number Portability requirements. If they have coverage in the area you’re transferring from and the account you wish to transfer your number from is active and in good standing, you should have no problems.
They recommend starting the process through their Activation Tool.
To complete the process, you will need:
- The phone number you wish to transfer
- The account number the phone number is on
- The name of the account holder
- The billing address on the account
- The PIN or security password on the account
According to their site, the process can take anywhere from a few hours to 30 days depending on the carrier.
Will They Unlock My Phone?
Yes! For current or former customers, unlocking is free. Non-former customers might incur a small fee.
General requirements include:
- The phone you wish to unlock must be active on the network for 12 months prior to unlocking and maintained service throughout those 12 months.
- The phone must not be reported lost or stolen
For additional details on unlocking requirements and the process involved, check their Terms and Conditions.

Great overall pricing
The choices here are much easier to grasp than at TracFone, and the pricing is great overall—especially at our 5GB usage level—but the risk of being stuck on the wrong carrier remains.

Buy as many minutes as you like
Straight Talk gives you the option of paying for several months at once. If you'd like, you can even pay for a year of unlimited service upfront. Not only does this save you money, but it also eliminates the hassle of having to remember to pay each month.

Straight Talk delivers great coverage in many locations, including access to the fast AT&T “4G” network that is four times faster than Verizon 3G in my tests. The price is right, and the ability to use the latest phones, including the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and Lumia 900 as well as many AT&T Android phones, is incredibly attractive. Unfortunately the ambiguous data usage terms and conditions detract from an otherwise impressively priced plan. Users willing to risk the ire of Straight Talk by streaming music or videos can enjoy fast speeds, good call quality and great prices. Until Straight Talk delivers straight talk about the data usage terms, users must be careful of investing large amounts of money in a phone to use with Straight Talk.Less
I can get signal pretty much anywhere, phones are good and cheap, and their plans don't cost too much
Great Phone, Great Signal, Poor Customer Service
I recently purchased a SIM card from Straight Talk to put in an unlocked phone I bought at www.flumongu7s.com. The SIM uses AT&T towers and I get awesome service. I have dealt with customer service before and I have to say they are the smartest group of people, no technical knowledge what so ever.Less
Be VERY carefull with straigh talk. Could lose $
On Sunday June 15 2014, I went to the Straight Talk website http://www.straighttalk.com/ and tried to activate new cellular service and port my existing ATT phone number for my cell phone. I followed all the direction provided on their website. I entered my billing information and ATT account information. When I reach the last step I clicked the submit button and their website gave me and error that the page was not available. At that time I called the customer support line at 1-855-222-2355 and spoke with a Gena Maradeaga with an employ ID 535505. I provided her with my name and Serial number on the Straight talk SIM card I purchased. I then informed her that the online activation was not successful and that my phone number was not ported correctly. She then informed me that the system did not port my number and that I would have to use the number that system provided me. I informed her that what they advertised was the ability to port an customers existing number into their system and that I could not use the service with out my number being ported. She then informed me that since the system had activated the sim card that I purchased with the wrong number than I would have to by a new sim card and try again. I then ask if she could cancel my order and refund my money so that I could try again. She informed me that she could not refund my money and that I would have to use the number the system provided in order to make use of my purchase. When I asked to speak with a supervisor she informed me that she did not have a supervisor and there was nothing she could do to refund my money. At that point I had no options but to contact my credit card company and dispute that charges. It was then that my credit card company informed me that Straight Talk had made two charges to my credit card for $49.41 and a total of $98.82. However, the original charge that Straight Talk made and refused to refund should have only been for $49.41 but their system charged me twice. I again contacted straight talk and was told no refund could be given. Please take away from this review what you will and be very careful if choosing to use this company.Less
Worse customer service ever and will rip you off be careful
Straight talk is the worse, they double billed me and insisted they did not even though on their own web site it said they did. Then they added a phone to my account with a different phone number that I never had or used and when I asked them to remove it they said they needed the serial number, I never had that phone how am I going to have the serial number, when I told them that they just said that is the procedure. And he told me he did not have and email account and I would have to fax it. Who faxes? And such a lie, he later admitted he had email and again said it is procedure. HORRIBLELess
Straight talk is false! !!!
I hate straight talk they lie so freaking much.they tell me that they will stop throttleing my internet speed when I get a new unlimited monthly card. Well my month was up and I got a card. Internet speed was normal for the first day and then they throttled me right back to very low speeds. I can't even get on google half the time. Before I got a new monthly card I wanted to make sure they were gonna put me back up to normal speed and dont throttle me until I hit there 2gb data bs. If they were then I would go with different carrier. Well they did and they throttled me for using 50 mb. now im stuck another month with this lyinng bs phone comp.. I've been with Straight Talk for 6 years and now they put me on their hot list. Unlimited my ass. Dont use Straight Talk they are shady jerks. They need to be shut downLess

I had contracts and found it quite distastful, I moved to Straight Talk and have never been happier. First, I control what I pay, second, I have flexibility where I can change from one plan to another monthly without having to worry about contracts etc., third, I have a diverse group of plans to select from, fourth, I can auto refill which helps when you have so much to remember I might forget, fifth, I can obtain customer service help on Straight Talk's Facebook page, sixth, they use AT&T and Verizon signal towers meaning uninterrupted calls etc.etc.etc. Straight Talk has kept me really happy!Less
Don't Waste Your Money
This is the most God awful prepaid phone service on earth. It took me a week to get a phone number; when my prepaid time ran out, they didn't notify me like they said they would and they cut off my service. When I called to find out what happened, they said I would have to reinstate my phone service with them and that they couldn't guarantee I would have the same number. I would have to wait another week for a new number, etc. In addition, their customer service representatives barely understand English and can hardly speak English. I returned to Verizon -- within minutes I had my Verizon account up and running again. Stick with the brand name pros -- AVOID THIS PREPAID "SERVICE" LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!Less
The Best Cell Phone Service Around!!
No doubt ST is the best cell phone service around. Just like "all" the other cell phone services customer service is outsourced. Like others, I too had some minors issues (e.g. service disconnected, phone not working, phone lost/stolen, camera not working) but everytime ST came through. They even have the 90days, 6 months and 1 year plans now; and I love it. So all of you nay-sayers can say what you want. This is a great plan that provides great service!!!. Its so great that my whole family and mother have subscribed. In addition, all of my son's friend have donne the same. The best thing about ST talk is the boat-load-of-money we are all saving!!!Less
