Great battery life, sharp display, very low price

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is one of the most affordable Android phones money can buy. Previously, such extremely affordable phones would come crippled significantly and lacking in features, but at first sight the Redmi 2 does no compromises: it has a fairly sharp, 4.7” display, the ubiquitous Snapdragon 410 mid-range system chip, and an 8-megapixel camera that shows promise.

However, there is a reason why this phone is not sold outside of Asia, and it’s the software. There is a lot to like about MIUI v6 that powers the Redmi 2 - its rich customization options with themes, it’s likable style and plentiful settings that you can manually tweak, and its mostly smooth operation. However, it is still a phone from China and leaves a lot of its important features to that market only: the Xiaomi account that you can register is all in Chinese, the cloud and streaming services as well, and even the Theme menu is all in Chinese. The biggest issue is that it seems that some apps just don’t run well for some reason, and those happen to be crucial apps: Facebook and the camera app crashed on us way too often.

If you are willing to tinker around with it, though, or want a phone with great battery life that captures decent images, the Redmi 2 will not disappoint, and for its price it remains a good deal.

The Redmi 2, despite the sluggish performance of its 1 GB RAM variant, finds itself above the rest of the flock, purely thanks to quality in design and the hardware-software combination. It’s clear that Mi devices are the primary vehicles for the Mi ecosystem, which will include devices more than just smartphones or tablets. For this reason, the Redmi 2 serves as the first point of entry. At Rs. 6,999, which is 1k higher than its predecessor, the Redmi 2 manages to be a budget device that can do it all, including 4G LTE, but to “do it all without lag”, the 2 GB RAM variant needs to come to the market as soon as possible, which will make it, yet again, one of the best budget devices in the market.

Xiaomi Redmi 2’s major improvement over its predecessor is the addition of the dual SIM 4G slots, higher capacity battery and a new user interface. While this may make sense for someone living in a city which is blessed with a 4G connectivity, for majority of buyers 4G is not such an important buying decision at the moment since many parts of India are yet to get 4G networks. Existing Redmi 1S users have no need to upgrade to the the Redmi 2, as barring 4G there isn’t much that’s changed.

Minor changes keep things fresh

from NDTV

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 replaces the Redmi 1S, one of the most popular phones of the past year, but at a higher price point. It is more polished in some ways but does not really raise the bar in terms of value for money. LTE is a huge feature, but has extremely limited relevance in India and is not something we would pay Rs. 1,000 more for at this point in time, given the choice. In that sense this phone is somewhat overshadowed by its predecessor.

Nobody with a Redmi 1S should need to feel any urge to upgrade. Those who want the best possible phone at this price point would do well to consider the Motorola Moto E (2nd Gen) and Lenovo A6000, both of which offer comparable features. Ultimately, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 has the best-looking spec sheet of the trio, but the new Moto E has the advantages of its brand value and the fact that you can order one without the aggravation of flash sales.

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is the best performer in its price segment right now. The company has improved almost every aspect of the device and added a few new features. The dual-4G element makes it future ready but till 4G becomes really widespread in India, the dual-3G element also adds a bit to the overall value. Except the brand value and service network, in which Motorola is still the leader, there’s really no reason to not go for the Redmi 2. Lenovo had the first mover’s advantage with its A6000, but it will have to give it up to Xiaomi now. Of course, you’ll have to get past Xiaomi’s flash sales for that.

No groundbreaking specs, no record-breaking performance, the Redmi 2 isn't a phone to top anyone's wish-list but one that will get the job done - and even over-deliver for the asking price. It's the kind of device that easily explains Xiaomi's growing popularity outside the traditional Asian markets. Definitely worth a try, especially if you can get a hand on the 16GB version with 2GB of RAM. Although it will certainly be more expensive, the big question to ask Xiaomi isn't how much it's going to cost - but when it will be available around here.
