The "1-Minute" Review

What's good

  • Bright Display
  • Good call quality
  • Fast processor

What's bad

  • Short battery charge
  • Narrow viewing angles
  • Sluggish camera

A slight variation of the Xperia Z, the Sony Xperia ZL is a top tier smartphone featuring a 5.0” LCD display, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, Adreno 320 graphics processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB internal storage - expandable to 64GB via microSDHC.

The 1920 x 1080 resolution display impressed many reviewers, however many also noted that the viewing angles of the 5.0” were limited. Engadget said, “look askew at the LCD to any significant degree and colors will quickly wash out, invert or otherwise deviate from their intended hues,” And CNET said colors were “vibrant and details were sharp, whether I was viewing photos or reading e-books and Web pages.”

The phone features a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front facing camera. Both cameras can record video in 1080p at 30 frames per second, and the main camera offers LED flash and a number of shooting modes, including 10-frames-per-second burst shooting.

While reviewers generally liked the camera, some mentioned that there was some lag in opening the app. “The app could take a few seconds just to start up, wasting enough time to miss a golden moment,” Engadget said.

Additional features include a non-removable battery rated by Sony at up to 15 hours of talk time, NFC capability and an Android/Sony UI hybrid OS. The Xperia Z1 also functions as a TV remote control.

Reviewers generally seemed pleased with the Xperia Z1. Phonearena summed it up by saying, “with the Z1, Sony has not only caught up with the competition. It's safe to say that it has even managed to leapfrog it in some areas”.

Overall we enjoyed using the Sony Xperia ZL, and like what it offers over the Z before it. Sadly the expensive price off-contract makes it a tough sell. Maybe getting this for $99 from AT&T with a new contract would make the pill easier to swallow, but that’s just a guess. The device is pr...

Maybe getting this for $99 from AT&T with a new contract would make the pill easier to swallow, but that’s just a guess. While the Xperia ZL is definitely not targeted towards the uber, top tier, fashion concious smartphone buyers who want the latest tech, it’s a very capable smartphone that boasts decent multimedia capabilities, a great, high resolution screen and a pretty decent 13 Megapixel camera. All powered by a very mighty quad-core processor. And it’s not as expensive as it’s other 1080p display equipped smartphone rivals.

The real selling point of the ZL is the camera, with which I was very impressed. Not only does the software work well, but the results are excellent. Throw in Sony's solid WalkMan player and good living room apps, and you have a solid entertainment device in the ZL.

Beautiful screen, attractive design, speedy performance, decent camera

from Digital Trends

The Sony Xperia ZL is almost a great phone. Beautiful screen, attractive design, speedy performance, decent camera. Yet in all of those categories there are a few minor problems that collectively mar the overall experience. Any one of them is overlookable, but are they all? And then there’s the price. It’s not cheap.

Android In Canada

Overall the design is pretty well put together and pretty well thought out

from Android In Canada

The Sony Xperia ZL is undoubtedly Sony’s best offering to come to Canada to date. It’s their best hardware and best software for any phone I’ve used from their camp. Again, this is not to say that it’s a bad phone, it’s a great phone. But when you put it up against the competition and even against it’s own co-flagship device, it doesn’t feel like to matches up well.

Should you run out and buy an Xperia ZL? In a word, no. There's nothing expressly wrong with it: I rather like the design, which feels modern, if a bit run-of-the-mill. It performs well, serves up plenty of battery life for average use cases, and even has a nice camera once you get used to its limitations (or aren't especially picky). But there are just too many great options out there, and while the Xperia ZL won't disappoint, your money will be better spent elsewhere.

At first we were a bit underwhelmed by the latter's lack of visual appeal, but the more we used it, the more we got used to its peculiarities, so we eventually grew quite fond of Sony's new device.

Note that the Sony Xperia ZL is not a smartphone for those who value fashion over functionality. Rather, it is a capable multimedia device meant to be used extensively, not admired behind a glass window. It delivers nearly flawless performance with its powerful, quad-core processor, while its 13MP will capture those precious moments in great clarity.
