Music-oriented device with attractive and candy-coated slider design

from MobileBurn

The Samsung SCH-u490 Trance is a very attractive, thin device with core features that average users will appreciate. Though it's delicate body is prone to damage, we can't help ourselves - it's a sharp looking phone that demands attention. We would have appreciated a better focus on standard features like call quality, but the device at least balances voice connectivity out with reasonable data connectivity - even if it lacks 3G. And with that, it still managed respectable battery life during light and heavy use.

The Trance is a music player at heart. Still, we can't imagine the device competing with a dedicated music player, though it provides an experience that comes close. External audio quality powered by Bang & Olufsen's ICEpower amplifier is impressive and not many phones boast a 3.5mm headphone jack. Lastly, don't expect much from the user interface—it's another entry-level Verizon UI that fails to be original. But who can argue with familiarity?...

And I love using T9word and have used it effectively and efficiently in my last two phones, one being the Chocolate. The sound sucks as well. The touch buttons are ok. But it's not like my chocolate! lol Summary: Don't buy it! Less

I hate this phone. When on a call if your face touches the touchscreen, it mutes the call. You can't close the phone to lock the touchscreen while you are on a call, so the mute thing is just something we are supposed to deal with or keep it on speaker phone so that the world around you can hear your conversation. The sound is really "tinny", also. I also really dislike when I am trying to turn down the volume of the keypad, it stays at a high volume until you've reached the volume you want. Not only does this defeat the purpose of turning down your keypad, it doesn't allow you to actually hear what the new volumes are. For the record, "low" isn't really very low-its still loud. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it looks nice and has memory for music--which is a feature I haven't used yet. Less

Bad Design

When placing a call Mute button gets activated with a cheek muting the speaker. It is very annoying. I have the touch setting set to a lowest sensitivity but it still mutes a call almost every time. I wouldn't recommend this phone.

If I could rate this phone less than one star I would do it. This is a horrible phone to use. While on a call, if your cheek touches the touch screen it can mute your call or press other buttons. And, I have it set to the least sensitive setting. Most of the time it doesn't ring when a call comes in and I have it set to both ring and vibrate. I doesn't do either half of the time. After listening to a voicemail the notice on the front window won't go out causing me to keep checking my messages more than necessary. I wouldn't recommend this phone to my worst enemy. Do NOT get this phone! Less

This is a very durable phone. If you, like me, are a klutz than this phone is perfect for you. I have dropped it countless times and it still works fine. I even dropped it in sweet tea once and after immediately taking it apart and letting it dry for a few days it still worked. I had a few problems with it for a while after that, but it was fine again in a month or two. The issues basically went away on their own. I use my phone A LOT and i have had it for almost a year (that fact alone should tell you that it is exceedingly durable) and it is very dependable. Also, I have gotten many compliments on it. It seems that I can't take it out of my pocket without someone telling me how cool it looks and asking to see it. Another upside to this is that it is amusing to watch them try to figure out how it works. For some reason no one ever knows how to work the touch screen part. But i digress. The point is that it is a very good looking phone. There are only two problems that i have with it, but they aren't prominent enough to take a point off for. One is that i don't get quite as good as service as the rest of my family does, even though we have the same service. The other is that when i first got it, the touch screen was very annoying because I kept on hitting the wrong thing. However, I got used to it and I don't have that problem so much any more. Less

After 6 hours hiking in 35 degree weather, the phone came out of my pocket with a fracture starting at the earpiece and spidering through the entire face (see customer photos). There is a weak point at the ear piece (corners in glass are fracture points). They should have just ended the glass lower than the ear piece. Samsung would not honor the warranty as this is "external damage" though it was just in my pocket. Read the warranty carefully. Where most would say that external "wear" such as scratches due to normal use is not covered, this warranty says that any external "damage" due to normal use is not covered. So basically, if you are using your phone normally, and it experiences "damage" of any kind it will not be covered, at Samsung's sole discretion. Why? Because Samsung couldn't possibly design the phone poorly to cause such damage nor could the glass possibly have a defect in it (sarcasm). Luckily, the manager at my local Verizon store replaced the phone for free after an hour of being on the phone with Samsung and the Verizon tech, being transfered to the Samsung Executive Accounts department, etc. Of course, that was only after saying my next step would be to contact the department of consumer protection and pursue the matter with the small claims court. I will never buy a Samsung product again. Less

If you have cheekbones, you will hit the mute button while talking to someone (even when you are careful about it). Followed by repeated "hello's?" from the caller. If you are quick enough you can un-mute..otherwise you will be calling back. 2. The battery life on this phone is too short. If you buy this phone, be prepared to keep your recharger handy, you're going to need it. 3. The numbers are too close. I've got small fingers and hit the wrong button all the time...very annoying! In sum, don't waste your money. Look for something else or hang on to the phone you already have. 4. Less

I have had this phone for two months . . .

And if it weren't for the plastic battery cover that comes off quite easily, I would keep this phone. The features were good and the battery life so far has been great. However, I will be returning this product soon because of the battery case.

Pro: Loud speaker phone - you'll need it because half the time you won't be able to understand the person on the other end of the line. Has no problem receiving or making calls. Solid build quality. Con: Touch pad is awful (gimmick), music player sucks, call quality is poor, no games, included wallpaper and themes are unappealing, display is so-so Using experience: 20 days Lack of dedicated music player buttons, poor sound quality and persistent snap crackle pop completely spoil any enjoyment in using this as a music player. Touch pad is annoying - significant time lag between the time you push a button and response - and half the time phone doesn't recognize touch - or navigates to wrong menu. I find myself repeatedly stabbing the musicplayer icon with my finger trying to get the app to open. Music app is nothing fancy, but adequate - problem is it only stays open for a few seconds after you stop using the touchpad - then the phone locks down - so if you are trying to figure something out and take longer than 10 seconds, you are out of luck - or if you want to skip to the next song or go back to the previous one, same deal - you have to unlock the phone again and then re-navigate to the musicplayer using the touch pad. This gets old fast. And no, according to Verizon there is no way to fix this. Additionally, you cannot set mp3s as ringtones - an inexcusable flaw in a music phone - can you say Verizon-greedy-beyond-belief three times fast? No video, camera is only 1.3mp - picture quality doesn't suck, but isn't great either. No games included - zero, zip, nada. As with most Verizon phones, you have to pay for wallpapers, themes, games - see Verizon comment above and consider it bolded, underlined and followed with lots of exclamation points. Call clarity is awful - the sound is loud enough (often too loud), but fails to be distinct so it is difficult to understand what people are saying. I noticed the same lack of clarity on the music player app - I have the exact same mp3s on my netbook as on my phone and find I constantly have to put volume up to ridiculous levels on the phone to distinguish sounds which I can hear clearly at half the volume or less on my netbook. Bottom line - ICE, shmice. Don't waste your time or money on this dreck. Less

I just got this phone, and have had it for 3 days. I haven't been able to test the battery life, as I have only charged it one time, and it's still going! This is a great looking phone, and does not feel cheap like other reviews have said. It does show finger-prints, so if you can't stand that, do not get this phone! As for the features, here is what I have experienced so far: Pros Great reception Great Music player Sleek look long battery life Easy to use Very customizable (ringers, displays, menu layouts) Cons Non-Standard USB connection on the phone itself (can't use a standard USB cable to connect the phone to your PC) Fingerprint magnet No EV-DO (although this didn't bother me, as it mainly is used to download music straight to phone, and other data services) No case or holster comes with the phone As for the ease of use, I was able to add songs onto the phone using Windows Media Player, and the internal memory will hold approx. 100 songs. You can add a 16Gb Micro-SD card. The charger is a really nice feature, as it combines the charger and USB cable all into one. I wish it had a standard USB connection on the phone, but it is proprietary. You have to use the cable that comes with it. However, you can charge your phone using your PC with this cable, and avoid the wall outlet, if needed. Overall, I like this phone alot. My wife got the Samsung Alias 2, and is thinking about switching to this one. I would definitely recommend this phone. Less
