A nice phone, but fails on so many other levels

After testing the device for one week, I still think that Samsung launched the Eternity on the market too fast. The look and design of the phone are nice and appealing, but it seems to be full of bugs and not up to standard features. The targets of the phone are definitely the AT&T subscribers, as there are many productivity tools and functions included in the phone that don't work otherwise. Overall, Eternity is a nice phone, but fails on so many other levels.

The Good

I guess the most attractive features of the device are the huge 3.2 TFT touchscreen with haptic feedback and the HSDPA technology. Another positive feature is the high-energy battery, which was much better than I expected in the first place. The TouchWiz interface, as well as the 3.5mm jack port and microSD card slot are also worth mentioning.

The Bad

Just about everything else, starting with the camera, music player and the sales package. There are some software bugs that need to be corrected, as the phone might freeze, especially when using the module camera. The lack of a USB cable and headphones is a real setback for users that choose to buy this phone.

The Samsung SGH-a867 Eternity is a rather small touchscreen cell phone, clearly designed for one-handed use. The touchscreen is responsive, and the haptic feedback adds a little extra to the overall experience. The TouchWiz user interface, while nice, doesn't really add much to the functionality of the phone, which is a shame. The music player offers good flexibility with headphones and storage expandability, but is let down by the poor interface and the fact that I have to remove the battery to access the memory card. Lacking a decent focus, the camera also suffers, though the photo editing features are quite handy and fun. Text input using the portrait numberpad and landscape QWERTY keyboard is a great experience, and the overall build quality of the phone is great. However, the lack of synchronization software, paired with the poor camera and memory card issue gets the Samsung SGH-a867 Eternity only a 'Recommended' rating from MobileBurn.com.

I've had this phone for over a year. It was great for a long time and did everything I needed it to. Just after it was out of warranty, it started to get funky. First, if the phone died, it wouldn't turn on after charging. I would have to take the battery out and reinsert it for it to come on. Then it would randomly get zero signal until I took the battery out. The last straw was when the calibration went haywire. I cannot dial a number, send a text, or even access my photos. I've tried to calibrate and used all the tricks online to no avail. It is just a paperweight that sporadically accepts calls. Less

I fell in love with this phone, until i had to replace it.. again, and again, and again... 3rd phone, one yr later :) The QWERTY keyboard sucks, and every 3 months or so it would start to quickly die on me... the first to go is the keyboard which starts tapping letters that you haven't even touched, [imagine the frustration of txting 4 letters and it taking 4 mins!] THEN, thanks to the lovely "3.2 inch vivid touchscreen" any messages, phone calls, that come through end up frozen and wont allow you to open them ..then lastly, it all together freezez up, and only leaves you with the option of "on or off" before it totally dissinegrates!!! I shake my head because i really love this phone with all its nifty options, but in the end, its not worth the trouble replacing over and over.. all i wanted to do was go back to my razor. fewer options, but at least i can send and recieve messages. This phone didn't work from the beginning. Screen locks all the time. Snap one photo, screen locks, Answer a call, phone locks, make a call, phone locks. I had it replaced (along with my husband]s which had identical problems) and the replacements are NO BETTER. In fact, over time the replacements are only locking up more frequently. I have even had it lock up and refuse to disconnect a call until I pulled the battery. This problem also prevents any use of a case. I HATE THIS PHONE AND WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG. I will look to replace both the phone and the AT&T service as soon as my stupid contract is up. Less

I was so excited about getting this phone. It had a nice big screen that would be great to check e-mail with and not have to pay the $30/month data plan. I was so disappointed. I am not a big cell phone user. I'm not constantly on it. I only make a couple phone calls a week and check my email/ use the internet once in a while. I have had this phone over a year now, and it only gets worse. The camera is bad. All of the photos are blurry with no auto focus. This phone constantly locks up. It just freezes and I have to take the battery out and put it back in to get it to work. The worse part is that the call quality is terrible!! I can barely hear the person on the other end, even after tweaking the sound setting. People get annoyed that I keep asking "what?". It's been like this ever since I got it too. More than anything, I just want to throw this thing at the wall or bash it in with a hammer. Less

We bought this phone about 7 months ago. It will not hold the calibration on the touch screen so texting is a very difficult manuever. It constantly is telling me I have missed calls when there are none. Over the period of time I have used it, the phone appears to be losing it's ability to find a tower and the reception is slowly diminishing. What a waste of my money! We had a Razor before this and just wanted to upgrade to a phone with a touch screen without too much money from our pocket. We really wish we had our Razors back. Don't waste your money. Less

I've had my eternity for a little over a year now. As soon as my contract is up I will be switching. I use to have a samsung slide phone and i do miss it. Pros: Durable, large screen, both number pad and querty keyboard if you tilt it sideways, easy to navigate Cons: scratches rather easily, not ideal for texting, freezes, poor multitask. The main reason I dislike this phone is the texting. I have a hard time using the touch screen to text, and it didn't take long to scratch up the screen while doing so. If you do get the phone i recommend getting a protective screen cover. I constantly double dial numbers and have trouble with freezing. I have to remove the battery at times and then put it back in to get it to work. I find the querty keyboard difficult to use as I'm always hitting the wrong buttons since they are tiny. Another problem I've encountered is sometimes I can multitask while on a call, but sometimes I can't. It really depends on the phone's mood. Other than that it is a decent working phone. considering how many times I've dropped it (like on concrete the second day of owning it cause it fell out of my pocket) it has held up pretty well. I don't like how slippery it is but it is very thin. It has the neat feature of being albe to turn it sideways to use the querty keyboard or upright if you prefer the other way to text like I do. The phone was very easy to navigate and it took me no time at all to figure out how to run it. It's pretty self explanetory. Overall the phone is ok, but personally I got tired of it constantly freezing and I am not a fan of touch screens. However I have heard that everyone with this phone loves it and has no complaints so maybe I just got a lemon. Every phone acts differently for different people. Less
