The "1-Minute" Review

With a nod to female fashionistas, Samsung offers up an exciting, new form factor for women who want an uncluttered phone with good looks and a focus on texting. The Samsung Cleo looks much like a woman’s compact or pocket mirror. This unique design allows for a keypad that makes texting enjoyable and the ability to view text messaging threads.

But the Samsung Cleo is not just a novelty phone. In addition for the full QWERTY keyboard, the Cleo boasts a 1.3MP camera, music player, expandable memory (up to 8GB) and comes in a choice of Pink, Blue and Champagne. As a practical matter, women will enjoy texting, talking and taking pictures, all with simple keystrokes.

Rounding out the feature set is Bluetooth, email capability, speakerphone and support for downloadable games, ringtones and applications.

Pros: Fun, fashion-focused design, has the most popular features for the casual phone user, easy on the eyes and easy-to-use.

Cons: External display small/monochrome, internal display resolution low, internal navigation buttons very small/squeezed.

Verdict: While clearly not designed with cutting edge technology, the Samsung Cleo offers a fresh, feminine feel and a feature set geared to a specific demographic. The Cleo makes texting easy and gives soft corners to mobile technology.

What the Critics Are Saying...

CNET

The Samsung Gloss is compact and lightweight with a nice display and a great QWERTY keyboard. If you're not looking for a lot of features, the Samsung Gloss is a nice and compact messaging phone for U.S. Cellular customers.

- Nicole Lee, CNET

I completely disagree with this review, it has an overall bad keyboard (malfunctions constantly), it does not have very good messaging (turns off when you attempt to send messages after about a month of having the phone), and it is most definitely not compact (does not fit in a pocket at all). There are also many problems with the battery pack. This phone deserves a 2 at best, not a 6. I know you're the professionals, but this is not a 6 rated phone. The keyboard malfunctions are the hugest problem for me, it puts in symbols instead of letters at times, shuts off if you press a button incorrectly, and is very bad for people with larger fingers. Besides that, it is a very difficult layout as well. The symbols are in difficult positions for hands to get used to, and as is the button to select them. The phone does not contain any way of using picture messaging without creating an account, a hassle as this phone usually does not connect to the internet easily (personally, mine doesn't at all). The messaging feature continually fails to send messages or just decides to shut the phone off! It is inconvenient when you need to send a quick message, as it glitches out so often. There are also problems with sending mass texts, as in texts to more than one person. Every time, the phone shuts off as it is sending a text message to multiple recipients, and will refuse to restart. As most women do, I wear skinny jeans a lot. This phone is inconvenient, as it does not fit in pockets whatsoever. It is far too large to fit in even a standard pocket. The only good thing about it is that it can take a beating. I have had this phone for almost 2 years now, as I am strapped to a 3 year contract. I have had many problems with the battery pack not charging fully, turning the phone off, and overheating if you use the phone at all while charging. This is a terrible problem, as I need this phone for school daily. A typical charge for me now lasts about a full school day (about 6 hours). This is very inconvenient, and a huge downside to a phone. So, why buy this phone? I see no reason to.

Doesn't sound like a good phone for you. I got my wife one and for the most part. it's been OK. We did screw it up attempting to send a text to multiple contacts. Had to follow instructions on Pg. 106 of the manual to erase messages to get it to stop rebooting when attempting to send a message. You may want to try that so yo can at least do basic texts for your remaining year .

Until 1 month ago I had no complaints but now the music player restarts the whole phone. I sometimes only get 2 or 3 bars of music before it restarts and other times almost a whole song. very annoying and frustrating!! tried to update the firmware but it said it was unavailable. have tried the micro sd card in 2 other devices and the songs play beautifully so the issue must be the phone. There's no SIM card slot either. The real problems began after I'd had it for about a year, it would randomly restart when trying to read a text, and no matter what I did, I could not read the text (clicking the alert, going into the inbox and clicking the text, trying to forward the text... all of these things caused cleo to restart.) Also, more recently, whenever I try and type a text cleo will randomly restart... I've wanted to throw this phone against the phone, because sometimes she would turn off 10 times before I'd get to finally type my message. Other than these recent problems (2 years might be a long lifespan for a phone) it has been good and easy to use, and I love the little keyboard for my small fingers :D Less

Loved this phone in the beginning. Hate it now.

I have this phone and it has a LOT of issues. It shuts off, I can't send a text to more than one person, Vibrations going wonky, It freezes(even taking out the battery doesn't help most times) Its good for the first few months then it starts having issues, you CAN get it fixed though it costs a lot of money.

I had to pay full price for this phone in 2009 becasue I was not far enough in my contract for an upgrade and I had accidently broken my old phone. With in 10 days of buying this piece of crap it started acting up; shutting itself off and on, txt messages not going through, calls not going through, getting a days worth of messages at midnight, etc. Took it back to my cellular provider who stated the only thing they could do was a software upgrade. So it was sent away for a week and came back wiped clean and "upgraded". Within 2 weeks (14 days) it started acting up again. Asked cellular provider to give me a new phone but they replied that it was not a problme with their service but with the phone itself. They stated that they will continue to send the phone away to get "upgrades", but I couldn't get a new phone. The only fix I have found for this phone is when it is really acting up you have to pull out the battery. Leave it out for about 5 minutes, reinsert battery and turn back on. This usually works but even then this phone is just too much of a pain in the butt! I would NEVER recommend this phone to anyone and after speaking to others who have this phone we all agree that no one should ever buy this phone. Less

I haven't had any issues with this phone for the most part - it even takes decent pictures as long as you are outside (inside pictures suck). Just over the weekend the phone started shutting itself off when I would start up the music player so I think that feature is pooched. I am not going to send it for repair - as soon as my contract is up I am getting a different phone. I also hate the fact that there is no lock out for the Internet and the button is right on the front. I don't have web access on this phone because it isn't worth it. Less

And the buttons are so tiny I'm always shutting off my games accidently. I wish I could delete the games that came with it. They suck. The alarm works great, better than my alarm clock. I've downloaded a game & a ringtone easily. It does miss alerts sometimes - I may see an alert that shows up 3 or more days late. I haven't tried the mp3 player yet cos I haven't got a mini USB cord. Mine is pink & it's so cute. Love the phone, hate Bell Mobility. (If anyone figures out how to get the Zoom to work, let me know). Less

to fix the lighting on the camera you use the up and down keys, and to zoom you use the right one to zoom in, and the left one to zoom out :)

I can't believe this is a Samsung phone..I've always had Samsung products and this is the worst to date! I bought it initially cause it was cute and compact. Just after the 1 year warranty expired, the phone started to do strange things like when I missed a call, it would turn off and turn back on. If I wanted to view whose call I missed, it would turn off and on again. Of course, it had to happen right after the warranty date and then Solo wouldn't even help me get another phone, I would have to buy one at the regular price!! I'm really disappointed and stuck with this phone as I have to wait till I can upgrade...I'm not paying regular for a phone. Any suggestions on what phone I could get from Solo that is good and has lasted more than a year or two?? Less
