The Ocean appears to be quite solidly built. There are no rattles or squeaks, and both of the spring loaded sliding mechanisms appear to be fairly durable.

WIRED: GPS for navigation, tagging photos, and locating friends. Instant messaging via AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. Support for AOL, Gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, and other POP/IMAP email accounts.

TIRED: Bulky and heavy (5.6 ounces). Top row of keyboard crowds phone's body. So-so antenna. No Wi-Fi. Screen nearly unreadable outdoors.

WIRED Out-of-the-box text messaging via AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN. Out-of-the-box e-mail via AOL, Gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo!, and POP/IMAP accounts. Google Maps-powered GPS simple to use, gets you out of tight spots. Hot looks good way to start conversations with attractive people.

TIRED It's a heavy, bulky brick. No dedicated number keys on the thumb 'board. No integrated Wi-Fi to augment Sprint's spotty network coverage. Screen virtually unreadable outdoors.

If you are in the market for a messaging oriented device like a Sidekick or a smartphone, the Ocean surely deserves a few moments of your consideration, and maybe even your hard earned cash.

Once Helio adds Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support to the Ocean, I might get too hooked on it to be able to go back to my GSM handsets. It's that good. I give it a "Highly Recommended" rating without reservations.

You cannot beat the services available by the contracts. 1000 minutes, two phones, everything free...It's great. The few times we've had to call customer support we've gotten a human in under 5-10 minutes. One such call was under a minute! The default browser is buggy, but there is Opera download-able for free. The screen will very rarely lock-up but it's not all too distracting. The Youtube video service is great, loud, but the video is very minimally blurry. The mp3 player is great, the camera/video recorder is great, the service is great. The Helio Awesome would have been a better name. Less

Great for myspace, facebook, youtube, google, craigslist and more, round shape helps keep the device in your hands better than a square device. 3G web network, Great Individual plans/Family plans Con: Freezes if you enter into a new area than what your used to (will do it once and then be used to it), not many bluetooth profiles, speakerphone almost non hearable, if sprint stinks in your area this might not be so great, but itll still work. Using experience: 1 months Wow, a multi media power house meet business functionality. This M2D is not meant to be used primarily as a phone, but more of a media center for those who are on the road or for teens who are into posting pics and blogs :D or for business persons who do mostly texting or emailing. Having said that i love it! I can post a video to Youtube one minute and then surf the internet the next or check my bank account balance online, or check flights or what ever. I say that for those who dont like the Ocean, you used it for the wrong purpose. This is a completely functional device that is lots of fun! I hope u will find this review helpful Less

Helio's Ocean is, and will be for some time to come, the best phone on the market. I love this phone and feel fairly certain I'll never find anything to replace my Ocean. It feels great in your hand. Actually feels like you're holding a device that isn't going to break if you sneeze while talking on it. The dual slider is not only cool, ultra efficient and comfortable to use, it's also has very solid stable movement. The finish, both the rubberized back and sides and the front display area are very durable and scratch resistant. I've used mine at work and elsewhere non-stop for nearly a year now without a single mark on it. It also just looks cool. Not flashy at all. It can just sit there on your desk and say, "Me...yeah I'm cool...what about it." Without every saying a word or doing a thing. But then when it comes to life, well then, you just might be a superstar!! Ocean's display is sharper and more vivid than anything I've seen, and I've compared it to more than one or two iPhones at the college where I work. It just looks great. The sound...even when playing MP3's through the external speakers is awesome...but it's just that much more awesome through headphones. It looks and sounds better than anything else out there. Where features are concerned, there is no competition. The included GPS, Google Maps, single messaging center (for text, MMS, helio, yahoo, google, earthlink, windows live, AOL and Exchange), all integrated directly with Instant Messaging, contacts and eMail for each of the services, and more and more. Take a picture and in three clicks it can be posted to your Flickr account. Shoot a video and in three more clicks it's posted to YouTube. You name it, this thing can do it. With a simple upgrade from the included Helio web browser to Opera Mini, you have a full featured, full html browser with landscape display. And more and more...I could go on ... Less

If you like having the latest in cell phone functionality, if you are a text monster, and if you live in an area well represented by Sprint, you may want to consider this phone with Helio. Helio is an imaginative niche player in the vigorously competitive wireless industry. Its populist business philosophy truly delivers on its promises of social networking and genuine innovation. Consider their "All In" plans: a customer need only select their minutes and everything else is included and unlimited, including their latest offering of an optimized YouTube service where customers can view millions of videos instead of thousands and can interact on the service much as they would do from their computer. In fact, you can even shoot a video using their new Ocean (More on the Ocean in a moment), and then tag it and upload it directly to YouTube. This free YouTube service is fundamentally juxtaposed to the profit-centric, highly controlled, fee-based a la carte offerings of the large carriers. (Breath, Scot, Breath) The comparison is stark. Helio, which is owned by SK Telecom, has positioned itself as a friendly alternative to the major carriers. When you are a Helio customer, you are part of a community. Whether you own a Fin, or a Heat or an Ocean, it's a Helio! In many ways Helio is to cell phones what Apple was and continues to be to computers: the smaller company that just seems to get it right. Helio made big news with its May 11th release of their breakout, breakthrough Ocean. In researching this article this writer found almost universal approval of this powerful device. Due to the truly innovative nature of the Ocean I am compelled to review it, because reviewing the Ocean is no less a review of the what Helio the company is all about. First, it's important to be clear that words mean things, company mission statements are supposed to mean things and when a wireless provider claims to put the customer first - it's supposed to mean something. But as a student of the wireless industry I have found numerous examples where the two major carriers ultimately act in their own best interest rather than the consumers, and veer from this only when they fear government regulation. The whole "we put the customer first" is market window dressing. They put profit first. I have nothing against profit. I'm quite fond of it. But call it profit! The reason I mention this is because Helio really does put the customer first, and the Ocean embodies this philosophy by putting more functionality, more freedom and more ease of use in their customer's hands than the two big carriers are willing to match. For example, with the major carriers, in order to have unlimited messaging, it will cost you an additional $19.99 per month. With Helio it is included. Adding a data plan with a major carrier is also an additional monthly charge, but with Helio you can surf honest to goodness rich HTML web pages all day long, at no additional charge. Remember, when AT&T Wireless or Verizon Wireless innovates, is is to produce services that will increase revenue, but since Helio's "All In" plans already include a big, bold bundle of breathtaking apps and services, their goal appears to be to provide an experience their larger competitors cannot match. To understand all this you need to understand just how truly innovative the Ocean is. So let me provide an overview. The Helio Ocean features: Idle Search: The ability to conduct a search immediately, right from your main screen, without having to launch any application, navigate to a particular URL, etc. You simply type what you want and you will receive default results from Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon and Yelp. True HTML web browsing: The Ocean provides a robust, graphically rich internet experience, just like the iPhone. For all the hype over Verizon's Voyager, in the end the Voyager still takes you to the same old uninspired, crunched-down, Verizon-controlled mobile 2.0. 2.0MP camera with flash, video record, even a mirror so you can center your face for self portraits. An all-in-one seamless message centerthat allows you to run multiple IM apps simultaneously. Using Buddy Icons, you can even see if your fellow Helio friends are online, further adding depth to their notion of community communication! You can even send pictures in IM's! GPS: Google Maps and Mapquest. Where Verizon charges me $9.99 per month, GPS is all part of the bundle. In fairness to Verizon, Helio offers free Google Maps, but to get the kind of GPS that competes with Verizon's VZNavigator, there is an additional charge. Still, they offer a functional, workable GPS at no additional charge. Bluetooth 2.0: The Helio comes complete with stereo headphones in the box, and a USB cable, both of which are sold a la carte by Verizon. File Viewer: Allows you to view Word documents. Multiple email accounts with push-through technology. Where Verizon makes you wirelessly sync, the Ocean receives your emails as they are sent. Ability to capture pictures and video content online, and save it as wallpaper. All this and much more, wrapped up in an attractive, oval-shaped, rubberized dual-slider that just screams to be used. Helio is NOT a carrier network. It uses the Sprint network and therefore Sprint's coverage area for it's service. Be careful to check coverage, as the Sprint network is not as pervasive as either Verizon or AT&T. If you like having the latest in cell phone functionality, if you are a text monster, and if you live in an area well represented by Sprint, you may want to consider Helio.   Less

Pro: Good value, versatile smart phone with lots of features Con: Helio's costly rate plans for low anytime minutes users At year end promotional sale prices, the Helio Ocean is a GREAT value. I got one for about 75% off the full retail price after signing up for a Helio two year new acct activation. Ocean's formfactor sort of resembles a much smaller version of the Apple iPhone or iPOD touch. But at $399 for either of those, they are well beyond my budget. The Ocean's display screen is not touch sensitive but still adequate at 2.4", for cellphone apps like text messaging, IM'g, address book lookups for email and calling your contacts. Where the Ocean really shines is its dual slider design, similar to the Sidekick, only more of dual personality phone. For truly mobile phone handheld use, the Ocean's lower (end) section slides down to reveal a traditional keypad for typical cell phone functions. Alternatively, you can slide out horizontally a full length QWERTY keypad, for intense texting, that instantly reorients the LCD to a landscape mode. SLICK! The Ocean has so many features - too many really - that, unless you have too much time on your hands, most cell phone users would never bother to learn to use all of them. Nevertheless, this phone is feature rich and suffice to say can be used far in excess of an everyday mobile phone. It has elaborate built-in "wireless" networking technologies, Voice, GPS, Bluetooth and Internet access, plus can be used as a portable device for multimedia applications (music file downloads, streaming video). The Ocean is really a smart mobile phone that doubles as a Do-It-All-In-One, extremely versatile device. In addition to a cellphone, it can be used for viewing or just listening to a variety of online news sources and multimedia entertainment. It even can be used to play colorful, "3D" games, with sound effects, although somewhat crudely on such a small handheld device. The sound heard through the built-in speakers (with manual up/down volume control buttons on the side of the case) is more than audible. The Ocean comes with stereo earbuds for "private" listening. Helio provides a generous amount of internal memory (209MB) for downloadable applications and user files. The Ocean can be upgraded to an additional 2GBs with an optional microSD plugin memory module. Like most digital cameras, the Ocean's built-in 2 megapixel camera can capture color photos and short videos for sending to friends and relatives. If this feature is used frequently as well as downloading a lot of web based pictures and music files is desired, having additional 2 gigabytes of extra memory storage capacity will come in handy. The Ocean is currently available as the flagship of Helio's cellular products. Other Helio models with designs much like many others from other cellphone companies, are also available (and at lower prices). For example, the Helio Fin recently came out as an ultra slim, flip phone with almost the same features as the Ocean. The Fin excludes a full set of text messaging keys of course, in a lightweight, far less bulky case compared to the dual slider Ocean. Is there anything to criticize? Sure, I don't like Helio's rate plans with start at $65 for unlimited data services and only 500 anytime minutes. I think a lower cost plan with fewer minutes would appeal to a lot of subscribers who already have a "regular" cellphone. Also, Helio's family plans are too costly as well, because to have even one added line, you must move up to a 1000 anytime minute plan. This brings me to one truly unique GPS related feature built-in to all Helio mobile phones, called "Buddy Beacon". This allows all members of a shared family plan to know where everyone else is located, (I should say, where the phones are located), at any given time. This could be a very useful feature for parents with teenage children, each with Buddy Beacon enabled cellphone with them when they are away fro Less

Pro: Everything about this phone is amazing Con: Except the battery life This phone absolutely delivers what it promises. I was torn between this phone and the iPhone. The ocean has all the same features plus GPS navigation and it uses the 3g network which is fastest currently available. There are a ton of mods you can download to make this phone even better. Free turn by turn gps programs, opera mini for full web browsing etc. What finally sold me on this plan was Helio's amazing all-in plans. %80/month I have 1000 day minutes and unlimited everything else you can imagine, including internet usage. This phone looks great, is easy to use and whenever someone sees it, they drool over it. Theres truely nothing out there right now like the Ocean. The only cons about this phone are the battery life. It take a lot of power to run this phone and i have to charge it every night. If you buy this phone get the car charger cause you'll need it at some point. Also, Helio uses the Sprint network and its not so great where I live so I tend to get bad reception in buildings. Less
