The "1-Minute" Review

The Motorola i605 is a candy bar phone that has the look of a walkie talkie. It’s Motorola’s first iDEN device, is well built, offers a speakerphone, voice dialing, GPS, Java capabilities and more.

This phone pays homage to the still vast buying market of pragmatic customers looking for call quality, simplicity and durability. On these metrics the i605 does just fine. Offering up to 4.8 hours of talk time and up to 240 hours of standby time, Bluetooth, USB, customization options for both graphics and ringtones, even data tethering capability, the Motorola i605 makes a stronger effort in this cell phone tier point than many others to provide a solid value.

Now, the iDEN technology has become synonymous with Push-to –Talk, so it doesn’t just look like a walkie talkie, it acts like one, too. You can push a single button and connect with others, making this a great choice for contractors and others who work in groups and need to say connected.

Motorola has produced an excellent device targeted for people who need reliability, good call quality and only those features which sync with their lifestyles. Not too much more, but certainly nothing less.

I had been very happy with my Motorola phone until the battery started losing its charge within a day, even when the phone was turned off. The friendly but incompetent customer support kept me on the phone for an average of 40 minutes for the repeated calls trying to figure out the problem. After the phone had finally been sent to their technical service center, they returned it to me that the phone was irreperable "due to customer abuse." I have done nothing to that phone that could have caused any damage (unless using it to make phone calls counts as "customer abuse"), but got the same comment, without explanation after I had sent the phone in for a second time for reevaluation. It seems that Motorola is just trying to get out of fixing or replacing the phone free of charge under warranty. You'll be fine with a Motorola phone as long as it works. After that, you're on your own. Less

You should know that the description Amazon offers regarding the features for the i605 is incorrect in that the i605 only has the Direct Connect function (walkie-talkie-like service through the wireless phone network) but DOES NOT have the Direct Talk function (true walkie-talkie service direct handset to handset, even in areas where there is no Nextel signal). My three star rating is just a placeholder. I had to choose a star rating, despite that I am not rating the phone, I am correcting an innacuracy in Amazon's description. Amazon should change the descriptive information offered for the i605 phone to make it accurate. Less

My problems with nextel did not stop when I canceled my service. I will get to the problems with the service. When I went to get a new phone a day before my contract expired, I of course wanted to keep my number. So as I went to get my Cingular phone (highly recommended), I had the old number switched to my new number. Today, I get in the mail my nextel statement for the month with a $200 early termination even though I had not canceled my service, but had simply got a new phone and switched my number over. This was on icing on the cake after 2 years of absolutely amazingy bad service from nextel. In my town, not a small town by any means, there are very few places that have any service. In the largest subdivision, you cannot get service anywhere. I constantly get comments from people trying to reach me that get the classic nextel line...Please hold while the nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located. Most of the time I would not even recieve incoming calls, calls would go straight to my voice mail. Not only would I not get the calls, but often I would not even get the voice mails until days or even weeks later. When I did actually take calls (and call out), I cannot count the number of times I've had my call dropped. I recieved so many different error messages sometimes I wonder if they just spend all their time at nextel thinking of different error messages to program into their phones. That brings me to the selling point of nextel, the famed and well-loved direct connect feature. This is an absolute joke. Direct connect only works MAYBE half the time I tried to use it. Even then, in the middle of the conversation I would be greeted by the loud beep of my phone telling me I wont be talking to that person anymore. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the nextel network. Text messaging with nextel is next to impossible. If it did not take hours to send or recieve a message, it took days, or maybe didn't even come at all. The internet access was fine, it the rare instance that it worked. Of course, when you don't have service, you don't get the internet access either. I was constantly getting the message "network not available". Calling and trying to complain to nextel is futile. Trying to get through to customer service takes forever and once you get through they do nothing. My experience with nextel has been nothing short of a disaster and I write this trying to warn anyone considering nextel. Stick with Verizon or Cingular and you will be much happier in the end. Don't make the same mistake I did. Less

Nextel is keeping a key niche of its market happy with the i605. These are professionals who need a rugged candybar phone with no camera, a decent memory size, the ability to perform text messaging and web browsing, and a loud "vintage" ring. This phone improves upon the i58, which has been known as the "construction worker's" phone since 2002. The color screen is the biggest improvement over the i58, which allows this phone to support color GPS maps. Battery life is roughly the same as the i58, which means you should be charging it about every other day. And best of all, the weight and size is about the same as the i58. So if you don't mind a phone that is 5 ounces and is 5" inches long, this is a worthwhile upgrade. I would expect NEXTEL to make this their flagship candybar phone for the next few years. I'm quite happy with it. Less

Reflection after one week of owning, (more after more time):

Alright, the bad first I.M.N.S.H.O.: 1. It's as large, and nearly as heavy as many older Nextel candybars (knew this before purchasing). 2. The keys have a terrible clicking noise (maybe not so bad, but draws attention while dialing, menus, etc). 3. They haven't yet figured out how to speed up the reaction time for rapid key punches in the OS (personal pet peeve, although almost every Nextel phone suffers from some level of this?). 4. If not for the extra large battery this phone would need charging before an average day of work (I have to charge every night or otherwise it needs charging before lunch, and I know this is subjective to many outside parameters). And now for the good: 1. Screen size, clarity and color vibrance is great (take note Moto/Tel). 2. Bluetooth works very well as far as the headset function is concerned (only one day of experience with this aspect). 3. Rubber surround makes holding the phone easy and comfortable. 4. The status light is back (I haven't figured out why I like this?!). Keeping in mind that I've only had the phone for a week but I've had access to four different Nextel models over the past two years, (2 candybars, 2 flips) this is my favorite so far mostly due to the Bluetooth. I've wanted Bluetooth since I'd first heard of the technology but I wasn't willing to give up the two-way and durability of Nextel phones. I hope that most future NextelSprints offer Bluetooth along with reducing the overall size of the phones I.E.: I830, I275 size with BT. More info to follow after longer ownership... Less

I have my likes and dislike. First the dislikes. For a phone that is suppose to meet military standards, if really feels cheap, expecially with the extend battery cover that come with the phone. This cover is plastic and makes the entire phone feel cheap. When using the keys, there is also a cheap clicking noise made each time you enter a digit. It has MMS compability, but you need someone with the same phone to use it. Cannot take pictures (not a camera phone) but it has an option for picture id. Likes, there is diffinitely an improvement in the signal strength compare to my i730. Overall size of the phone is nice. LCD screen is very good on the eyes (I wear glasses) If you purchase a data base service, you can send email right from you contact list. And the automatic sleep modes helps save battery life. Less
