The "1-Minute" Review

LG has had quite a run with its Chocolate series and now the Shine. Interestingly, the Shine is in some ways a hybrid between the successful “shiny” phone series and the form factor of the LG Chocolate. Unfortunately, the result is a posh fashion accessory that is none too easy to use.

The LG Shine suffers from two key drawbacks: an extremely sensitive joystick and a crunched keypad that insists on mistakes. The joystick is a spun metal nub which is used in lieu of a more traditional navigation array, and while its minimalist look adds to the beauty of the device, it’s a chore to use with any accuracy.

While not a good choice for a heavy texter, the Shine is most definitely a showpiece and clearly one of the best looking sliders on the market.

When closed, the Shine’s exterior is one large mirrored finish. When you touch any button, a handsome 2.25 inch display appears, capable of producing 262K colors. The screen also uses Multi-Angle Vision Technology, which allows you to view the screen from almost any angle. The Font style is adjustable, as is the brightness and backlight timer. You can select either an icon or list style menu. You can also customize the Shine will a selection of ringtones and wallpapers.

The Shine supports Yahoo, AOL and MSM for instant messaging, and comes with a mid-range feature set that includes voice commands, wireless web browser and email.

If you put a premium on the look of your phone, the Shine will definitely stand out as a class act. However, as an intuitive convergence device the Shine falls short.

I find the K770 to be well designed and built. The few niggles in the design are small enough so as to probably not bother too many people.

WIRED Crisp photos at up to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels. Feels solid, comfy in hand. 3G! Main nav joystick translates well to games like Pac-Man and Tetris. Always-on flash good for dimly lit close-ups.

TIRED No 3.5-mm headphone jack. Grainy video clips limited to 42 seconds. Joystick (oy stick!) can be hypersensitive. Heavy at 4.2 ounces. A faux-Razr keypad in 2008?

The Sony Ericsson K770i is a very nice phone. In fact, it is very close to being a great phone. The only things that I found lacking in it are its network support, which doesn't cover North American markets well, and its relatively poor outbound voice quality on calls. The K770 offers a lot of great features in a very compact and elegant design, but the voice quality issue alone is enough to keep the K770 from earning our top mark, but I still give it a very solid "Recommended" rating.

Pros: big screen, microSD slot, nice battery life. Cons: the joystick, flat keypad, horrible reception, I'll have had this phone for two years in late September. After nearly two years, I'll be getting a new phone tomorrow, so I thought I'd give this ol' phone a review before I gave it my own personal Bon Voyage. Being a high school sophomore, it's pointless to say I'm a texter. Not as much as some others, but about 200 messsages a day. In the beginning this was a great phone. I loved everything about it. The flat keypad was hard getting used to but I eventually started texting on it like a pro. I was impressed by the large screen and the battery life, as I'd had problems with the latter when I owned my previous phone. When I discovered the microSD slot, I was thrilled, because I take lots of pictures. I never had problems with this phone until the beginning of my 2nd semester as a freshman. By then, I'd owned this thing for about a year and two months. By then, the screen was scratched horribly from being in my pocket. Not exactly an uncommon thing with a slider phone, but that doesn't mean it's any less annoying. My reception became horrible. On band trips other people on the bus will have 2 or 3 bars while I have no bars. I live in a very rural county; with lots of trees and mountains nearby, I need at least a bar! Two weeks ago (I'm writing this on August 13, 2010), some of my keys fell off. With a Razr-like keyboard, when one keys goes, it takes two more with it. Sigh. Why did I give this another star when it deserves two??? The durability. Man can this thing take a hit!...or a fall. Haha. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped this thing from 10 feet up or spilled Gatorade on it. XD It still works! All in all, not bad. But it could be a lot better. Less

I've owned my Shine for some time now and it is the worst cell phone I've owned for several reasons. First and foremost, in many instances you cannot tell when you have a call due to the inability to get enough ringtone volume. To make matters worse, the vibrating feature is equally underpowered. Between the two, if there is anything but silence around you or if you are over 10 feet from the phone, you cannot tell you have an incoming call. Now, the camera function has lost the ability to save pictures unless you immediately name the photo. Image needing to take several consecutive shots without taking 10 or 15 seconds between each shot to go into the menu, go to the rename function, rename the photo, to back to the camera function, set the camera to the correct settings and get set to take a second photo. Unless your needs are for only one photo at a time this phone is nearly useless in that respect. The battery indicator is useless. It has a 3-section level indicator. When it goes from 3 sections to 2 you have about 5 minutes talk time left. It's like having a gas gauge that tells you have a full tank until you only have a few drops left. In addition, when on the charger it never tells you when you have a full charge. Leave it on overnight and when you look it still says, "Charging." There are too many things wrong with this phone to even consider it. Customer Service is non-existent. Choose another brand, choose another phone. Less

Sleek phone, short charge...

from Amazon
It's a good looking phone and it's easy to use. However, it only holds a charge for two days at the longest and if you take a lot of pictures or downloading music it'll die even quicker. Also, is it just me or does this phone tend to slip out of your hand a lot?????

From the sound quality I get from my mp3, to the crystal clear voices of those I call, are just a few reasons I love this phone! If you really want to make it more personal, choose protective covers in an array of colors and designs. I have to tell you that I love the handsfree headset which allows me to listen to my music, but, instantly pauses the music when there is an inoming call. The real ease is that you can push a button on the headset to answer the phone and then push it again to resume listening to your music after your call has ended. Less

First, a little about myself. I am a 16 year old teenager who texts a lot. I initially got this phone because of the mirror. At first, I loved it and could never put it down. Now, 10 months later, I am going to get the LG Xenon. There are some good features about this phone. The camera is fantastic and has many different options including zoom, different flashes, photo editing, etc. I do not find the keys to be too small at all, but I should note that after 10 months of texting, they are starting to wear away. It has many things that I found useful, such as a calendar and bluetooth. It is also extremely easy to use. I also found it to be very durable. Lots of reviews have commented on scratches on the screen. I have dropped this phone multiple times, even accidentally kicked it across a parking lot, and it only has a few scratches along the side. On the other hand, there are some problems with this phone. I regret not getting a full QWERTY keyboard. This phone has T9 and is easy to text on; however, sometimes if I try and text too fast, it freezes. The phone can only hold about 160 messages. It has also started to randomly turn off. I hate using this phone outside on sunny days. It is impossible to see, even when you put your hand around it to shade it. The battery is also problematic. I never know how long it will last. I understand that texting wears down the battery faster, but even when I text and call the same amount, the battery drains faster some days and slower other days. Sometimes, I can go a week without charging. Other times, it doesn't even last a day. I find myself bringing the charger along just in case. The joystick has a slight learning curve. I'm used to it now, but anyone who tries to use it can't at first. Overall, I would say this is a good phone for someone who only makes a few calls here and there. If you're going to text at all, avoid it. Less
