Consumers looking for a cheaper smartphone that runs Android may want to check out the Huawei M835. If you have not heard of Huawei, you are not alone. They are a Chinese company that is relatively new to the cell phone market in North America. The M835 is small and simple and runs on a stock build of Android 2.2.
The phone features a 2.8 inch touch screen on the front and, like many smart phones, that is where all the navigating and the user experience happens. The screen has crisp text and decent colors when not in direct sunlight but is rather small compared to just about every other smart phone out on the market.
The M835 comes pre-installed with Swype, which makes text messaging a breeze. Surprisingly, even with Swype, errors in text messages are a commonplace which is abnormal for using Swype. Most phones that use it do not have this problem.
Call quality and the speakerphone both underperformed. The speakerphone simply is not loud enough, and calls in busy environments are filled with background noise.
The processor on the M835 also lags behind the times at a paltry 532 MHz. When using the phone you can clearly tell it needs better hardware. Applications take a long time to open, and trying to run several applications at once is not a good idea and can even crash the phone. You would think this weaker hardware might lead to better battery life, but that is not the case either. Battery life compares to the larger and more advanced smartphones.
