There are still quite a number of performance issues but the problems of Windows OS are far too deep to disappear overnight. Still, if modding and tweaking is your game, you can fix quite a lot of the issues that come out of the box.

But while this certainly isn't a flawless phone, the results are impressive indeed. The multimedia power of the HD is immense, and only a touch away on that huge screen. The high-resolution camera and the tons of software available, make the HD a truly attractive package. And with looks like those - what more can you possibly want in a phone.

The great response and sweet thumb-optimized handling are remarkable (in WinMo terms) but that's hardly an achievement of the Touch HD alone. The company's headliner is the cutting edge of a consistent effort that started back with the HTC Touch and went sky-high with the Diamond.

The crown of that effort, HTC Touch HD, is now set on a path pretty much signposted by iPhone. Its driving inspiration has brought to the scene a capable candidate for a hefty bite at the apple.

I will say over and over again, as long as you don't have the right software behind a component, it will not work at its full capacity. Graphic drivers are a necessity for HTC devices that feature 3D interface. Still, Touch HD is better than any other HTC device and a leap forward for the Taiwanese company.

The Good

The amazing touchscreen, the 5-megapixel camera, as well as the cool design are among the strong points of HTC Touch HD. I would also like to mention here the rich sales package that contains an 8GB microSD card. Music quality is also an improvement from the previous model, as well as the 3G signal reception and the in-call sound clarity.

The Bad

I would've expected some improvements in the performance department. I was pretty disappointed to find that HTC Touch HD seems to have almost the same benchmark results as Touch Pro. Not that the latter is not good enough, but smartphones that feature the TouchFLO 3D interface always seem to lag when browsing the menus. The situation changes when this is not active. I would also like to mention the fact that HSDPA connectivity, as well as the other connectivity tools (EDGE, Bluetooth) work below average, which is unacceptable for such an expensive high-end device.

There were still times when I accidentally hit one of the touch sensitive keys when trying to tap items at the bottom of the screen, and times when the device didn't respond as desired, but overall it was pretty easy to live with.

It's a shame that the Touch HD's camera didn't have a flash, as it otherwise asserts itself as a very capable multimedia device. I'd also have preferred a glass panel to cover the screen, rather than the soft plastic that is actually used. Aside from these minor imperfections there isn't much to complain about with the HTC Touch HD, and I'd say it's probably the best iPhone rival out there. In many ways it surpasses the iPhone's capabilities and is more business-friendly, although the iPhone's interface is slicker. Bearing this in mind, I give the HTC Touch HD a "Highly Recommended" rating.

We were excited when we started testing the phone, hoping that we’ll see something great and revolutionary. Sadly, the reality is different. Hardware-wise, the Touch HD is impressive with a large display and excellent build quality. As a phone, it offers many functions and a very good sound during a call, but the software is not innovative at all. TouchFLO 3D, which we’ve seen in Diamond and Pro is the best for a WM smartphone, but not for a multimedia device what we wanted to discover in the HD. The music player is good, we can live with the mediocre camera, but why the bad video capabilities and not the multiple codec/format support like seen in the rivals? This would have made it possible for the users to really enjoy HD clips. So far, the Touch HD is a good smartphone but doesn’t have what it takes to be a good multimedia phone. As we’ve said before, we hope this will be fixed by future software updates, making the HD the best Windows Mobile device available. What we would really love to see is Android on that beautiful screen, but that’s not expected officially.

If you want the freedom that Windows Mobile gives you and can live with the interface then no question you will like this device, in fact I would go as far as to say you will love it. If however you want something that is easier to use but comes with a lot of restrictions then the iPhone may be a better alternative for it’s media prowess, it is for me for now anyway, until Windows Mobile 7 comes out and hopefully delivers the media experience matched to the already great business features with an easy interface, unless of course Microsoft surprise us all and embed the Zune software in the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade, now that would make this decision one to revisit if a ROM upgrade would be available. Final verdict is the HTC Touch HD is a brilliant device let down by the same old Windows Mobile problems, if you can overcome them this is a fantastic device, make no mistake.

For first-impressions we’ll point you at our unboxing post.  We’re still waiting to hear back exactly what will and will not be included in the retail packaging.  Someone at HTC has obviously given no small amount of thought to the perceived quality of what’s included - the USB cable, for instance, is finished with a soft-touch, rubberized coating; a small point, perhaps, but you notice it - but I wish they’d given equal thought to the AC adapter.  A universal design, with slot-in country-specific pin sections, with a UK plug it protrudes down from the socket not up and, as such, if your power point is in a low skirting-board, it won’t fit.  Just as with the USB cable, it’s a small point but, yes, you notice it.
