8.1/10
Informr score
The Google Pixel 3a XL currently has an Informr score of 8.1 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 35 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

The Pixel 3a XL is the top-end model in Google’s 2019 budget-focused lineup. But it shares many similarities with the smaller, lower-priced Pixel 3a.

Notable differences include:

  • A larger 6-inch OLED display running at 2160-by-1080 pixels
  • A larger 3700mAh battery

However, this comes with some tradeoffs. Technically, the larger screen has a lower pixel density. Still, it’s not low enough to be noticeable in any major way.

Also, while the battery is technically larger, most reviews found that battery life between the two models is nearly identical. In some cases, the Pixel 3a actually won out.

Otherwise, the phones are identical. For more on what to expect from Google’s latest release, be sure to check out our summary of the Google Pixel 3a.

It’s the tiny bits and an excellent camera that make Google Pixel 3a XL a great phone. The charm lies in the simplicity of the experience and the fact that everything works as it should. The software is perfectly optimized, you get priority access to everything Google, the battery mileage is decent, the handset has stereo speakers and retains the audio jack, the handset is slimmer and lighter than its main competitors, and Google isn’t skimping on the notch-free AMOLED display.

A more affordable twist on the Pixel 3 XL

from T3

The notch-less Pixel 3a XL remains an impressive mid-range smartphone, with fast-charging and three years of the latest Android OS features guaranteed – no mean feat at this price point. That said, all of these features can be found on the Pixel 3a, which is £70 and less unwieldy thanks to its (slightly) smaller 5.6-inch display.

I’d say that the Google Pixel 3a offers 75% of the Pixel 3 experience at 50% of the latter’s price. This is no easy feat and Google has done it by cleverly playing to its software strengths. The question is, is this lower premium attractive enough to lure you to ditch your current Samsung or Huawei phone (which may even have "better" specs) to give the Pixel a go?

Google has for sure cut some corners with the Pixel 3a XL. The polycarbonate body looks quite dated and there is no waterproofing or wireless charging support like the Pixel 3 lineup. However, the software does the real magic here. The smartphone, despite sporting a less powerful chipset, delivers almost Pixel-like experience. The cameras are the strong points of this device and it is certainly best-in-class. Battery life is decent as well and the display looks good, though it lacks HDR support.

Yes, its cameras outgun everyone else in that range (and a little above it as well) it is no match for the budget and lower-premium flagship segment which bring better processors, more RAM and storage, better displays, bigger batteries, in-display fingerprint scanners and a whole lot of fancy notch placements and designs to the party. It is not as if the Pixel 3a XL is a bad device. It isn’t. It just is a little out of place in the current market scenario.

The same great Pixel experience for less

from TrustedReviews

The Google Pixel 3a XL makes for a great big-screened Pixel 3 alternative, without the price tag. It nails the software and camera experiences so important to capturing the feel of the full-fat Pixel 3 series, in spite of its more affordable nature. However, its price tag places it up against more capable and more powerful rivals.
