Reviews summary

Based on 6 reviews

What's good

  • Ergonomic and manageable sized screen
  • Smooth performance
  • Quality construction and materials
  • Good camera for the price

What's bad

  • Poor battery life
  • Poor viewing angles
  • No flash
  • No LTE connectivity

The Asus Zenfone 4 is Asus's first attempt at a basic budget smartphone. At 4.9 x 2.4 x 0.4 inches, the Zenfone 4 is downright small compared to many of its competitors. Reviewers point out that the petite size combined with the curved, soft-touch back panel make this a very ergonomic and manageable phone. They add that while the device is made entirely of plastic it is well constructed and has a nice heft that makes it feel more premium than it actually is.

In a market saturated with 5-inch+ displays, the Zenfone 4 sports a comparatively small 4-inch LCD screen. In order to stay in-line with the budget price, the display doesn't have the best resolution around at 480x800, but thanks to its small size it still manages a respectable 233ppi pixel density. For the most part, the screen delivers a solid experience with critics pointing out the fairly accurate and vivid colors. They mention, however, that the screen suffers from contrast shift when viewing it at different angles and poor bright light legibility.

With a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, the Zenofone 4 isn't going to wow anyone with its blazing speed. Still, it is powerful enough that experts had no problem performing routine tasks like browsing web pages, navigating the home page and launching apps. The 1GB of memory is on the higher side for phones in this category and allowed critics to have several apps in the background without a significant hit to performance. The device also comes with 8GB of internal storage and an expandable microSD slot. Sadly, it does not come with 4G LTE connectivity.

Despite its fairly solid performance, the one drawback of the phone is its poor battery life. The 1600mAh battery barely lasted reviewers a full day of standard web browsing and use. When they put video streaming into the mix, it only lasted a mere 3 hours. Luckily, the battery pack is removable so users can have a spare charged pack on hand if necessary.

For its price-range, critics were sufficiently happy with the 5MP rear camera. It comes packed with a slew of different modes like: HDR, Selfies, Panorama, Beautification and Smart Remove, which are generally reserved for higher-end devices. For the most part, reviewers were very happy with the image quality in good lighting situations though Recombu noticed some blurring and color inaccuracy. They were also fairly impressed with low-light pictures, though the lack of flash makes it impossible to take photos in extremely dark situations.

Although experts bemoan the battery life, overall they were pleasantly surprised with the Zenfone 4. NDTV states, "…the Zenfone 4 is a fantastically capable device…" Gearbun adds, "…the Zenfone 4 is one of the best Android smartphones to be released in recent times…"

One of the best budget smartphones you can buy

from tech2

The Asus Zenfone 4 packs lots of features into a tiny package. But the budget price means that the phone has cut corners, which is evident in the low-resolution display and underpowered processor and camera. Yet, there’s lots to like about the Zenfone 4: the design and the build quality is one of the best we’ve seen on a budget phone, it’s simple to use and basic functions run smoothly. It also lets you boost the storage with the SD card slot. If you are cash-strapped, looking for an Android phone that provides good value for money, the Zenfone 4 is one of the best phones... A new entry to the budget smartphone category that could scare rivals

from Tech Advisor
For £99, we're impressed by the ZenFone 4. It's nicely designed, has brilliant software features, is suitably speedy and has decent battery life, but it's not outstanding. We'd like to see a slightly better camera and the addition of 4G connectivity. We'd suggest checking out the EE Kestrel and the Motorola Moto G 2014 as alternatives to the ZenFone 4, but it's certainly a worthy contender and we think you'll be satisfied if you decide to go with this good budget smartphone... Pretty small but still packs in some decent features

from Recombu
The Zenfone 4 is a frustrating tale of two phones. There’s the compact, user-friendly 4-inch smartphone that sports a colourful design, slick performance and a neat interface. Then there’s the phone that struggles to last from sunrise to sunset, that has you keeping one eye permanently on that ever-decreasing battery meter. So while the Zenfone 4 can’t quite beat the mighty Moto G’s all-round experience, it’s still a nifty little 4-incher that has a lot to offer casual users. .. Quite responsive with compact design

from Fone Arena

The Asus Zenfone 4 is a good device and offers more in terms of build quality, attractive UI and storage space considering the low price tag. 1 GB RAM does result into medium multi tasking up to some extent which is a surely one of the plus points of the phone. However, we feel that it could have offered a much sharper display and a good camera which are two of the most important features of any smartphone. Asus got the pricing and device in whole right for the Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6, as both the devices and same goes for the Zenfone 4. We expect that that the A450CG Zenfone 4 model could... Aimed squarely at capturing the bottom end of the smartphone market

from NDTV

It seems that Asus is really on to something here - the Zenfone 4 is a fantastically capable device, considering its price. A lot of that has to do with the choice of an Intel processor - could the company finally be about to crack the mobile market, after struggling to do so for years?

The Zenfone 4's screen is pretty bad but nearly everything else is outstanding. We're particularly impressed with the device's camera capabilities. Full HD video recording is pretty neat, and it's nice to have a front camera - more so one that isn't terrible! We're looking forward to the A450CG re... Full review

I purchased my zenfone 4 about 7 months back, and I have been facing performance and battery issues since the past 2-3 months. It can handle the everyday tasks well in its initial phase for a few months, and you might love its great UI and colour scheme, but later on you will face lagging in even simple web browsing , social networking, reading documents or while switching between different apps. Another main concern is the battery. After using for about 4-5 months, you will notice that even a full charge will drain out in 3-4 hours even with simple phone usage like calling or messaging. Even the battery saver mode doesn't come to the rescue. The primary camera is good for its price but the front camera gives very poor picture quality. Low light photography is next to impossible. Otherwise, looks wise the handset is good. Anyone who is looking for a budget phone for temporary usage may consider buying this. Less
