Cnet

This camera can change the way you shoot video

from Cnet

While most people will be happy sticking with or buying the Hero 7 Black, the Hero 8 is the best action cam for hardcore users and, when the Mods roll out, it could be a great vlogging solution for a lot of people.

The best action camera

from The Wirecutter

It’s the raddest action camera ever made, with an improved mount design, better stabilization, and even sicker hyperlapses. Video quality is still best in class.

The Hero 8 Black is the best GoPro yet, but without its Mod accessories (available for pre-order in December 2019) it's only a minor update on its predecessor. The more streamlined design, new microphone and improved app are all big bonuses, while pros will appreciate the higher max bit-rate and 1080p livestreaming. If you just need a waterproof action cam for travel duty, then it's still well worth considering the Hero 7 Black. But those new Mod accessories, which are coming soon, should push the Hero 8 Black into a league of its own, particularly for vloggers.

Quite a significant upgrade over the predecessor

The new built-in mounting fingers alone might be reason enough for some people to upgrade. GoPro has also made noticeable improvements to image and video quality, and the new interface with its presets and shortcuts is even easier to use. Technically, many of these new software tweaks should come to the Hero 7 Black too, since they share the same processor, but it doesn't seem as though that will happen.

It’s just such a good camera that does everything well. First the design, which is really easy to mount and use. Plus it’s already waterproof and you don’t need to put it inside a case. Then the modular feature, which allows you to take the camera to the next level by adding different mods. And finally the performance. Amazing video quality and the best built-in stabilization system that doesn’t involve a gimbal.

The action camera to beat

At £379, the GoPro Hero8 Black is anything but cheap, but the experience it delivers isn’t cheap either. There are a couple of things we would have liked to have seen - a bigger screen and better low light video capture. In addition, getting footage on and off the app was a bit fiddly when using an Android 10 phone. That said, the nuts and bolts of using the Hero8 as an action camera are exactly where they need to be. The promise of the upcoming mods which look set to add improved sound recording and a vlogging display to the mix are whetting our appetites nicely too.

The action camera market may now be a two-horse race since DJI launched the Osmo Action, but when it comes to stabilization, GoPro just took the lead with the Hero8 Black. What’s more, GoPro has innovated with its tried and tested design while still nailing the basics, and supporting higher frame rates across higher resolutions than the competition. This makes the Hero8 Black pricey, but sensationally stable.

The GoPro Hero 8 Black doesn’t represent a massive jump forward in image quality over the Hero 7 Black, then, but GoPro hasn’t rested on its laurels. The new built-in mounting prongs are a big improvement over the clunky clip-on frame of previous generations and it’s good to see GoPro giving its stabilisation system a boost. The new auto TimeWarp mode is simply brilliant and the microphones are very impressive at reducing noise from wind turbulence on the move.
