The DJI Osmo Action is a fantastic little number that runs circles around (other) GoPro copycats. It also gives the Hero7 Black a serious run for its money and still manages to hold its own now that the Hero8-series has arrived, with its great image quality, plenty of shooting modes and that selfie screen. If you vlog a lot, need steady video and don’t want to pay GoPro prices, the DJI Osmo Action is a great alternative.

DJI's twin display action cam is a real GoPro rival

from Expert Reviews

Given that this is DJI’s first foray into the world of GoPro-style action cameras, the Osmo Action is a pretty good debut. It shoots detailed, smooth 4K footage at 60fps, has a range of useful modes and is natively waterproof, too, without the need for a case.

DJI’s first action camera is almost as good as the best GoPro

The DJI Osmo Action price is $50 cheaper than the Hero7 Black, though practically speaking, you can usually find the Hero7 on sale somewhere. Even if there is a $50 difference, though, I’d still recommend the GoPro. Image quality is just a little better, with nicer colors and sharper pictures straight out of the camera. They both offer incredible stabilization, but the GoPro sacrifices less to achieve it, with less severe image cropping and more frame rates, as well as its fantastic SuperView FOV. The Hero7 Black is just the better camera, but not by a ton.

The DJI Osmo Action is an exceptional rugged and compact waterproof action camera, and a great option for current DJI users who want to remain within the same ecosystem. While there’s no denying the all-out impressive pedigree of GoPro’s flagship Hero 7 Black, the Osmo Action’s performance, usability and features are more than capable of satiating the most fearless thrill-seekers. That front screen is also a game-changer for vloggers.

Good value

from Gadget Guy

The DJI Osmo Action, looks and feels robust. It works very well. It’s reasonably priced. And it has most of the functions one could want.

Great for vlogging

from Stuff

Despite a couple of quirks, the Osmo Action’s great video quality, rich design and RockSteady stabilisation - which seems to defy the laws of physics - make it a stellar action cam.

A worthy GoPro challenger

Get the DJI Osmo Action if you need an action cam for your selfies. However, we think the GoPro 7 takes better motion-stabilized video.

Stabilise your footage without a gimbal

from Pocket-lint

It might not sell billions, but for the DJI user who wants to stay in the ecosystem, the Osmo Action might just be the extra camera that enhances their creativity and lets them add another angle to their footage without having to have a finger in both the GoPro and DJI pies.

Neat features like a small front display and HDR video set it apart, and compatibility with its rival’s accessories will make the transition easy. But there are some glaring omissions, including GPS, limited voice controls and basic social sharing options.

The biggest downside is that the image crops more than GoPro’s, in both photo and video.
