You’ve heard the roaming horror stories: cell phone bills in the thousands waiting to surprise Canadians after spending small amounts of time south of the border.

Roam Mobility is a Vancouver-based company that aims to make your travel roaming to the US a little easier on the pocketbook.

Service Breakdown

Roam Mobility gives you 3 options to reduce your roaming costs using their prepaid SIM cards and your unlocked phone or tablet.

1. Daily Plans

With prices ranging between $2.95 and $4.95 per day, Roam Mobility's daily rates are perfect for weekend holidays or quick trips. All plans feature unlimited talk and text in the US and calls to Canada from the US for staying in touch while your away. The $4.95 plan also includes unlimited data with the first 15GB per month at 4G LTE speeds.

2. Snowbird (Monthly) Plans

Planning a longer visit? Then a Snowbird plan is likely a better deal. You can get unlimited US talk and text--including calls back to Canada for $34.95 per month. For $49.95 you can add unlimited data to the package. After you've used 4GB of data, speeds may slow to 2G speeds.

NOTE: Snowbird plans require a minimum of 90 days service at the time of purchase. Additional time may be added in 30 day increments. Maxmium term is 180 days.

3. Data Only Plans

Don't need to call while you're travelling or looking for a way to keep your tablets online? Roam Mobility's data plans offer 4G LTE speeds at a drastic savings over the data roaming rates of most Canadian carriers. Plans range from $9.95 for 300MB over 72 hours to $59.95 for 5GB over a month depending on the amount of data you need.

What to Watch For

You’re using an American number

Roam Mobility uses an American service provider. This means your SIM card will have an American phone number. You’ll have to circulate your American contact information with your business contacts, friends and family before you go.

There’s also a good chance that you’ll be forcing some additional charges back to your Canadian contacts if they don’t have a US talk-and-text plan with their current cell phone provider.

If this is the case, you can recommend they use Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp to send you a message and you can call them back since calls to Canada are included in most Roam Mobility Plans

Roam Mobility works on 3G and 4G networks across the United States. If you’re travelling to a major city you shouldn’t have a problem with coverage. That said, there are some large coverage gaps in the midwest and parts of Texas and Maine. Double check Roam Mobility’s coverage maps before you purchase a plan.

Call Forwarding is a One-Way Street

You can set up a service with your Canadian number to forward calls to your Roam Mobility number while you’re travelling. This package will cost you extra money from your Canadian provider and forwarding to the US might incur additional charges.

Roam Mobility's 'Unlimited Data' Isn’t a Replacement for Your Home Internet Connection

Roam Mobility’s service is great to keep up with emails, upload some Instagram pics or refresh your streaming music playlists. However, once you go through your allotment of 4G LTE data, speeds get very slow, very quickly.

The maximum available data per month is 15GB. While this is likely higher than the limits of your current cell phone plan, it's still not hard to blow through with any amount of video streaming, video chat or frequently updating the apps on your phone.

Worried about your data usage? Our Data Savings Guide can help you trim data usage without making sacrifices in how you use your phone.

Final Thoughts

Using a Roam Mobility SIM card allows you to select from a roster of service plans (talk, text, and data) based on your travel needs. These plans will, no doubt, offer a very competitive travel option when compared to your current service provider’s offerings.

Overall, Roam Mobility is shaping up to be a Canadian traveller’s top choice for saving money south of the border.

Online reviews, which have given 4- and 5-star ratings, have used words like “flawless”, “awesome service”, and “best option” to describe the services.

Despite the inconvenience of having an American number, the affordability of Roam Mobility’s plans and services make it worth your while.
