Is the Apple iPhone beyond my reach?
First time cell phone user, am retired, on a limited income, need to call the US occasionally, otherwise my calls are local and brief. Looking for simplicity.

Hi there. On some levels...the iPhone is a very simple phone and easy to operate. I have many older relatives who have adopted their iPhones and love them. That said...it is a "smartphone" with plenty of extra features you might very well not need. And..it is expensive in comparison to a basic phone.
If it is truly only for calling and nothing more, I'd consider a $50-100 basic phone for this purpose and avoid the contracts that typically come with iPhones.
