Why does listening to voicemail through earpiece shuts off the playback when screen goes dark on the ZTE ZMAX Pro?

IT seems like a common problem but I see no answers yet. Seems the proximity sensor stops the playback. It may be the screen going black that stops playback, but either way it seems that you cannot hold the phone to your ear to listen to messages. Anyone else find a fix?
