I had the same experience a while go when my contacts and text messages deleted by my little boy. The contacts are easily recovered if you used Gmail. However, the text messages is much harder as few people back up them.

Check out this tutorial(link), which helped me successfully restore deleted text messages and photos. Should work on your Android phone, too.
