1x is a CDMA network protocol and is short for 1xRTT. It's also called CDMA2000. Translation: 1x means '1 channel', and RTT stands for 'radio transmission technology'. This is a 3G technology used by Bell, Telus, Virgin Canada, Verizon, Sprint/Nextel.
