The Toshiba Excite 7.7 is just one of several Android-powered tablets from Toshiba. It comes in a 7-inch form factor, uses anNVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, offers up to 32GB of onboard storage, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by default. It’s presents a formidable proposition on paper. But just when it seems like nothing could ever go wrong with the Excite 7.7, Toshiba goes and ruins things.

A lot of reviewers have gone on record to say that the 7-inch form factor offers the “sweet spot” in terms of tablet usability and portability. In this regard, the Excite is as sweet as any tablet can be, with its 7.7-inch 1280x720 AMOLEDtouchscreen display. It also carries several other hardware niceties like 1GB RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS, microSD card support, and microUSB connectivity. Its main camera is equipped with a 5-megapixel sensor, while the secondary one which sits up front is a 2-megapixel one. All of these hardware features are kept inside a lightweight aluminum case that measures just 8mm thick. For something so sleek, the Toshiba is a beast.

The problem with this tablet is that Toshiba was determined to put a $500 price tag on it. When it was first launched with this pricing, most people cried fowl. And then when the $200 Google Nexus 7 came out, well, you do the math.

The Excite 7.7 is a feature-packed Android tablet that is truly worthy of praise as far as its hardware and software attributes are concerned. But when you factor in its retail price, that’s when things start to turn sour for this device. It’s definitely worth consideration, but not if its priced north of $300.

Toshiba hasn’t skimped on the Excite 7.7. It is a fantastic tablet that hits the mark in almost every way. The battery life isn’t the best, but everything else about this tablet is great, especially its screen and build. It’s one of the lightest and best-feeling tablets we’ve... More

The price will be the downfall of this amazing little machine.

This tablet has a killer display, excellent performance, and an extremely comfortable form factor - so, what's wrong with it? Sadly, the price will be the downfall of this amazing little machine. This is, hands down, one of the best tablets I've ever used. However, with the $200 Nexus 7 on the horizon,... More

No longer regarded as a newcomer in the Android tablet scene, Toshiba is doing a great job in building up its reputation with its new line of Excite tablets. Just like its names, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the diminutive Toshiba Excite 7.7, as it boasts top-notch hardware in a compact... More
